Engineering Hope: The Rise of Scholar-Leader Nicolas Watkins

Every scholarship funded makes a ripple of possibility. Today, we’re honored to introduce you to one of those ripples, Nicolas Watkins, a scholar applying through the Charles Hall Chapter, in Oklahoma City.

At 18, Nicolas has already charted a course far beyond Edmond, Oklahoma, blending academic excellence, servant leadership, and a passion for innovation.

Nicolas’s story begins with scarcity. Growing up in a community without a single Black STEM role model, he discovered robotics in fifth grade and never looked back. He sought out a National Society of Black Engineers junior chapter in San Antonio, virtually meeting weekly and even commuting for key events. By his junior year, he was elected Vice President of a chapter he helped build, demonstrating remarkable initiative and resilience.

WHAT’S HOT

Known as the “Red Tails” because of their unit markings, the Tuskegee Airmen overcame much adversity to become one of the most respected units of the Army Air Corps. In June 1941, the Tuskegee Airmen program officially began at the Tuskegee Institute, a highly regarded university founded by Booker T. Washington in Tuskegee, Alabama.
