The primary focus of ARAC's school outreach is to inspire students to stay in school and get a good education. For twelve years ARAC has averaged over 40 public appearances and school visits per year. Our reach includes all ethnic and socio-economic groups. Last year by using speaking engagements at K-12 schools, three state universities, Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, Luke AFB, Davis Monthan AFB, air shows and libraries, we were able to reach thousands of young people. Since 2006, over 300 students have attended the chapter's Aviation Career Education (ACE) Academy and over 500 students have received orientation flights.
In virtually all the schools visited in low income areas, many students don't believe that they can become pilots, engineers or doctors. Many have no ambition to go college; some have never been to an airport or have ever flown in an airplane. Most of these youths have never seen an African American, Hispanic or female pilot. ARAC puts minority pilots and other professionals in these classrooms - people who look like these students. As importantly, through partnerships we provide resources and opportunities to expand the classroom beyond the boundaries of the school building.
